How you see the situation:
You are keen to maintain Russian trade interests in the region, but in the Aral Sea and the water problem that exists you have little interest. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan should learn to conserve water. Sure, you have a lot of knowledge in water technology that you could share, but only in a way that benefits Russia.
You are aware that public opinion considers you to be responsible for the current situation in the region as a result of Moscow’s former planned-economy. There is a risk that this may lead to outraged feelings of those affected and thus the ethnic conflict with Russian interests as targets. Russian interests still have much influence over the industries that operate in the region. Political stability is therefore in your interest and to find solutions for a sustainable usage of the natural resources. But of course, your resources are not unlimited.
