Green Cross Sweden vill bidra till miljösäkerhet genom ett nytänkande i försvars-, utrikes- och miljöpolitiken. Green Cross arbetar med ett helhetsperspektiv och integrerad verksamhet för att främja fred, säkerhet och hållbar utveckling.
Vi är en del av Green Cross International som grundades av Nobels fredspristagare Michail S. Gorbatjov. Green Cross är politiskt och religiöst obundna och verksamma över nationsgränser världen över.

Green Cross verkar för ett globalt paradigmskifte gällande värderingar och etik. Vi arbetar för att förändra rättsliga, etiska och beteendemässiga normer inom regeringar, den privata sektorn och det civila samhället.
Vi arbetar holistiskt inom områden som säkerhet, fattigdom och miljöförstöring för att främja en hållbar och trygg framtid.
Green Cross söker lösningar genom dialog och genom att skapa samarbete. Vi är aktiva på olika plan för att förebygga och lösa konflikter till följd av miljöförstöring.
Vi stödjer människor som drabbats av miljömässiga konsekvenser av krig, konflikter och miljökatastrofer orsakade av människan.
För att uppnå en socialt, miljömässigt och ekonomiskt hållbar utveckling världen över arbetar vi genom de Globala målen för hållbarutveckling (Sustainable Development Goals) samt Earth Charter deklarationen som är en etisk vägledning och grunden för vår verksamhet.

Green Cross Swedens projekt stödjer FN:s sjutton globala mål för att utrota fattigdom, bekämpa klimatförändringar och säkerställa en fredlig och inkluderande värld. Genom att arbeta för att nå målen så kan vi uppnår också en miljömässigt, socialt och ekonomiskt hållbar utveckling.
Vi arbetar i linje med internationella ramverk som Earth Charter för ett globalt paradigmskifte gällande livsstil, värderingar och etik. Earth Charter deklarationen är grunden för all verksamhet inom Green Cross.
Vi driver praktiska program med vårt internationella nätverk av experter för att skapa globalt samarbete för att förhindra miljökatastrofer och miljöförstöring samt för organiserad miljösanering.
Green Cross Swedens kansli finns på Kastellgatan 1 i Göteborg. Vi har ett brett kontaktnät och riktar oss till alla delar av samhället däribland utbildningsväsendet, offentliga sektorn, företag och beslutsfattare. Vi arbetar – lokalt, nationellt och internationellt samt över organisationsgränser.

Vatten – rättvis fördelning och tillgång till rent vatten samt förbättrad hygien
”Water for Life and Peace: Right to Water and Sanitation, Water for Peace, Smart Water for Green Schools, Aqua for Life”: Vi verkar för Sverige för förbättrat skydd mot föroreningar av vatten i hav, sjöar och floder.
Green Cross arbetar för förbättrad vattenkvalitén i Sverige och Östersjöregionen. Vi informera allmänheten om farorna med föroreningar orsakade av gruvdrift och ammunitions dumpning. Vi genomför diverse vattenprojekt och anordnar anläggningssystem av regnvatten och byggnation av Eko-Bioanläggningar på skolor i fattiga områden för att främja tillgång till rent vatten och sanitet på landsbygden.
Miljösäkerhet och fredsfrämjande projekt
”Environmental Security and Sustainability” med nedrustning – och ickespridnings arbete för att reducera och eliminera massförstörelsevapen med syfte att främja hållbar utveckling och fred. Socialt och medicinskt program: ”Social and Medical – Health Care, Social Care, Education” – med stöd till offren som blivit utsatta för avfall från kemiska vapen och kärnbränsleavfall.
Från Sverige jobbar vi med att skapa en Miljöbrigad med användningen av civila och militära resurser för miljöskydd och förbättrande av beredskap inför miljökatastrofer.
Ett klimatneutralt samhälle
Green Cross arbetar for en snabb och rätt omställningen till ett klimatneutralt samhälle som respekterar planetens gränser. Vi är en av de första organisationerna i Sverige som arbetar för att öka klimatmedvetenheten.
Vi arbetar genom en holistisk metodik för att väcka mänskligheten kollektivt och individuellt till klimatanpassning och -åtgärder genom informationsspridning och utbildningsseminarier. Vi fokuserar på lösningar för att inspirera människor till handling. Green Cross Sweden är aktiva inom nätverket KlimatSverige.
Vi planterar träd
Green Cross planterar träd i Katsel och Medrogungkar i Tibet med inhemska trädslag från regionen vilket bidra för att motverkar klimatförändring.
Vi plantera träd även i Amazonas regnskogen och stödjer de lokala urfolken Asháninka och Surui. Varje enskilt inhemskt träd som planterats i regnskogen är ett litet steg mot att bevara vår planets lungor.
Value Change
“Environmental Education”, “Earth Charter” och “Earth Dialogues” Green Cross arbetar holistiskt för att främja ett paradigmskifte gällande etik och värderingar.
Green Cross Sweden är informationscenter för Earth Charter och affiliate för Earth Charter International. Vi lyfter fram Earth Charter deklarationen som är en holistisk vägledning för att främja en rättvis, demokratisk, fredlig och hållbar värld. Earth Charter ett implementerings-verktyg för regeringar, kommuner, näringsliv, skolor och individer som stärker att helhetssyn. Earth Charter komplettera de 17 Globala mål för hållbar utveckling.
Etisk ekonomi och ledarskap
Green Cross främjar Etisk ekonomi och ledarskap. Vi anordnar seminarier som utgår ifrån att det går att driva framgångsrik affärsverksamhet utifrån en etisk vision som tydliggör att miljöskydd, mänskliga rättigheter, social och ekonomisk rättvisa och fred går hand i hand.
Green Cross Youth
Vi ämnar inspirera och stärka unga människors engagemang för klimat, fred och miljö genom kultur evenemang. Vi delar ut ett stipendium varje år till Jan Danielsons minne som är avsett för unga människor som är engagerad i freds- och klimatfrågor.

The Living Bread Project
“Ancient people knew that food should be your medicine,” says Björn Martén, founder of the Living Bread Project, in partnership with Green Cross.
With the acceleration of our worldwide climate changes people living in hot areas need an action plan to prepare themselves for long periods of drought, as well as other extreme weather conditions, which can occur anywhere in the world.
Björn Martén, a long supporter of Green Cross Sweden, has created a project that could potentially help millions of people with just that. The Living Bread is a mixture of seeds, lentils, vegetables, and spices that is spread out on a sheet that could be left to dry in the hot tropical sun.
“The Living Bread is a full meal made from highly nutritional organic ingredients, which you can make in your own kitchen”, says Björn. Not only does it taste fantastic, but his recipes include a variety with the basic recipe for Living Bread, Living Cakes, Living Yummies and Smoothies.
“As we are in the midst of extreme climate change scenarios, the Living Bread can serve as lifesaving storage food,” explains Björn Martén. The Living Bread contains many nutrients and enzymes. One of its main advantages is it can be stored for long periods of time, and this is why it can be utilized as solution for Food Security.
The Living Bread is aimed to be a part a global project “Bread, Water and Peace for All” involving a rescue plan to help people to survive when threatened by starvation, as a result of severe droughts or war. This aligns with the work of Green Cross to bring forth holistic solutions for Environmental Security and Peace.
Families from an impoverished community outside of Nairobi were given the opportunity to give it a taste. “We started our project with women with disabled children. The result was that the children became more physically active after eating the Living Bread. The mothers were extremely inspired to see their children’s positive responses,” Björn says with a smile. He continues, “The result is improved health as it can help strengthen the body’s immune defense. The Living Bread also became an income generating activity for the communities by producing and selling it at the local market. All in all, it helped raised their dignity, which is a small revolution.”
What makes this food source unique is the nature of its ingredients. Björn Martin explains, “the Living Bread on a greater scale makes even more sense with organic ecological farming. A part of the projects is the ‘Living Garden’ where the goal is to teach communities how to grow their own crops in a sustainable way and without the use of harmful pesticides.”
The Living Bread is also 100% vegan, and in colder climates can be made at home with the use of an electric dryer. The idea is that by shifting our diets we can increase our health and wellbeing.

Björn Martén is the founder of the NGO “Geist,” meaning “never-ending spirit when going from words to action,” and for three decades has pioneered creating sustainable system solutions inspired by nature, resilience, and adaptation to climate change. He is CEO of Flatö Kayak Center, on the island of Orust 100 km North of Göteborg. He provides kayaking as a nature-based methodology to promote balance and wellbeing, working with diverse groups, from activating youth to physically and mentally disabled persons. He is also a leader within the Center for Ecological Technology, and Tikitut community-based tourism.
Björn Martén is a wholehearted supporter of Green Cross Sweden and the Earth Charter. Together with Green Cross he has partnered in the Earth Charter Days for the French youth soccer team CAPCX Plan de Cuques, at Gothia Cup 2023, which included kayaking at Lake Surte and field studies for sustainability and social impact for community-based organizations for students from University Gothenburg.
Green Cross Sweden is working together with Björn Martén to further develop The Living Bread project in other parts of the world.

To celebrate #UNDay 2023, a special concert featuring the Environmental Symphony: The Movement and world renowned cellist Michael Fitzpatrick, on the theme of ‘The Frontlines of Climate Action’, is held in the General Assembly Hall at UN Headquarters in New York.
The theme of this year’s UN Day Concert reinforces Secretary-General António Guterres’s call for “faster, bolder climate action,” and intends to galvanize world leaders ahead of the COP28 climate conference in Dubai later in the year, and the 2024 International Conference on Small Island Developing States in Antigua and Barbuda.
A multi-media symphonic experience featuring a live orchestral performance, thought provoking narration, and mesmerizing synchronized visuals, Environmental Symphony: The Movement explores our history, our future, and our ability to make a difference.
In commemoration of “United Nations Day” on October 24th, the Environmental Symphony: The Movement will perform at the UN General Assembly Hall with leaders from 194 countries.
Hosted by Family Offices for Sustainable Development (FOSD), the purpose of the event is to not only celebrate and reaffirm the principles of the UN Charter that have guided humanity for the past 78 years, but to mobilize world leaders around the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The origin of Environmental Symphony was a passionate composition by Dr. Alan Zavod as a live performance masterpiece with five narration roles that continue in the tradition of ‘Carnival of the Animals’ and ‘Peter and the Wolf’. An ambitious and epic work that spans billions of years, from the formation of the planet through to the devastation of our current age, and a chance of hope for the future.

Bringing the World Together for a Sustainable Planetary Future
The Family Offices for Sustainable Development (FOSD) Summit at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will bring together world leaders, government officials, diplomats, philanthropists, civil leaders, and select Family Offices from across the globe to highlight the power of data and public-private partnerships to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the world’s most vulnerable countries.
The UN Multi- Partner Trust Fund Office and the UN Office for Partnerships – launched the Family Offices for Sustainable Development . Its mission is to mobilize family offices across the globe around the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and optimize their capacity to have an impact through philanthropy, investments, and public-private partnerships.
As the official impact partner, the Family Offices will not only utilize its network to bring the Environmental Symphony to communities around the world, but will channel the support generated towards the most impactful institutions, campaigns, and programs that are achieving the SDGs.

NATURE IS THE BEST TEACHER
Interview with Inger-Mette Stenseth

Inger-Mette Stenseth is a newly elected Green Cross Sweden Board Member. Her collaboration with Green Cross goes way back. She is based in Molde Norway, and is networking worldwide to bring forth innovative and creative solutions for a sustainable planetary future.
“My journey with Green Cross started already more than 20 years ago. I worked with Green Cross when we had the opening at the Library of Alexandria in Egypt. Already in 2002, we presented the Earth Charter as a tool for value change and new beginnings, and where we started talking about the ice melting, inspired by the words and wisdom of Chief Oren Lyons, and the work of Tonia Moya connecting everyone internationally with the Green Cross.”
In Need of a New Beginning
During the We Grow Together Summer Camp, 45 young participants from 22 countries were gathered, and where Inger-Mette, a veteran change-maker, met with them. “Meeting the young people here in the Netherlands from so many countries, from throughout Europe, the continent of African, to Costa Rica, Nepal and Malaysia, was so very inspiring!”
Inger-Mette believes all generations must come together in what is emerging as a transformational process. She sees a new beginning for the ecological movement, where we move from human rights to human duty and the Rights of Nature[1]. “One thing that comes with this new consciousness for humanity is to learn from nature, and for example where we can even see a tree as a teacher. We have so much to take in from the natural world.”
We’re working on many levels from kindergarten, to teenagers, and to youth. Our methodology is guided by the Earth Charter aimed to bring forth value change and holistic perspectives for an ecological civilization. This initiative can grow together not only through the network of Green Cross but in partnership with other organizations.
Learning from Nature
“We need to listen to Nature.” Inger-Mette explains, “The key is learning from the extraordinary nature of the living world of our Mother Earth, where we can begin an inner transformation and an inner dialogue within oneself, and a dialog with family and friends, one’s neighborhood, village, and school, and the people we meet.”
“We are living in of time of transformation, where transformational leadership is coming forward. There is a new idea of transformational ownership [2] that makes us rethink our choices as a civilization and as individuals. We own the climate crisis, and all the planetary challenges together as eight billion human beings on the planet, and each of us are unique, and everyone has a piece in the puzzle. Everybody’s important, everybody’s included. It is a human right and human duty to look after the things that give us life, fresh air, freshwater, fresh soil, and that the soil or soul of humanity is to respect that.”
Inger-Mette’s best advice to help the younger generation achieve this is to get in the French spirit.
“We need to do like Napoleon III did in Paris. He romanticized nature and has built multiple forests in the country. Because of him, we have the two lungs of Paris, the Bois de Vincennes and the Bois de Boulogne. He is also responsible for the largest human induced forest in Europe in the Bordeaux area. In addition, for Inger-Mette, France also represents the COP21 and the historical 1.5 degree.”
“My advice to the youth of today is to work on an inner transformation, to get the Olympic [3] spirit burning strong inside the heart and the inner DNA, to say that yes, we can do it! Yes, we improve every day, and yes, it is team building! It’s a spirit of ´We Grow Together´ into an ecological civilization and we can start by planting trees.”
The trees in the forest and our ecosystems are sources of tremendous intelligence and can provide us with a learning. So, for us everything begins with respecting the natural world, and absorbing what the nature of Mother Earth can teach us. This is apart of the new education of our time”, says Inger-Mette Stenseth.

Green Cross International and Adventure of Humanity are legacy organizations dedicated to the work for peace and environmental security.
The collaboration is a partnership aimed to bring forth project work and fundraising. The agenda includes organizing diverse annual events around the world, of which can cultivate resources for sustainability.

The Adventure of Humanity project was started by Michael Jackson and Nelson Mandela in 1999. Michael Jackson held two concerts, one in Seoul and in Munich, where the proceeds were donated to Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, The Red Cross and UNESCO.
After the two legends passed away in 2015, Richard Nilsson was endorsed to continue the Adventure of Humanity Project by Katherine and Joe Jackson (creator of the First Music Family in the World, and father of Michael Jackson), and as well as by HrH Chief Mandela (grandson and heir to President Nelson Mandela). Today His Holiness the Dali Lama, and the family of Tara Gandhi, the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi also support this initiative.
Richard Nilsson is connecting world personalities who support to the Adventure of Humanity Project, to raise funds to donate to existing charity organisations to ensure they can continue their work. The organization is currently developing a Peace alliance in South Asia and the Pacific region.
Green Cross International
Green Cross International (GCI) was founded by Nobel Peace Laurette Mikhail S. Gorbachev in Kyoto, Japan in 1993, to promote global cooperation for environmental security.
The global mission is to respond to the combined challenges of security, poverty and environmental degradation to ensure a sustainable future. GCI works to change legal, ethical and behavioral standards in governments, the private sector and civil society.

En kallelse för fred med Moder Jord
– Mitt namn Erena Rangimarie betyder balanserade fred på maoriska. Det är vad jag står för. I årtionden har mänskligheten varit fångad i en krigsdialog där vi kämpar mot varandra, men även mot vår Moder Jord. Det är dags att ta sig ur denna krigsdialogen om vi någonsin vill uppnå freden.
Erena Rangimarie Rere Omaki Rhöse är en maorisk prinsessa och dotter till de maoriska överhuvudingar i Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Raukawa stammar och Whanganui älvstammarna. Erena är medlem av den kungliga Waikato Māori familjen från Aotearoa, Nya Zeeland.
Erena är en bärare av sina förfäders kunskap och en läkare inom traditionell Māoriskmedicin.
– Jag uppmanar till fred för alla världens länder där människor lider på grund av krig. Jag efterlyser till fred för mitt folk och ursprungsfolken som inte har upplevt den på århundraden.
– Jag kallar till fred och solidaritet efter pandemin, där människor fortsätter att dö varje dag. Framför allt efterlyser jag fred med Moder Jord som mer än någonsin lider av konsekvenserna på grund av våra handlingar och oförmåga att inleda en fredlig dialog för att skydda henne. Freden är vad jag djupt tror på och står för.
Erena Rangimarie Rere Omaki Rhöse vill föra fram Earth Charter till FN för ratificering till det internationella samfundet. – Som FN-rådgivare har jag möjligheten att synliggöra Earth Charter”.
Deklarationen är holistisk och består av etiska riktlinjer med grundläggande principer som främjar en rättvis, demokratisk, fredlig och hållbar värld. Earth Charter kompletterar FN:s 17 Globala Mål för Hållbar Utveckling (Sustainable Development Goals) och bör ingå i samarbetet inom FN.
Erena förkroppsliga rösten av Moder Jord och har varit ambassadör för Green Cross Sweden i många år. Som FN-expertrådgivare arbetar hon för att främja Jordens och naturens rättigheter.
– Tillsammans med Green Cross planerar vi att starta framtida projekt tillsammans med ursprungsfolken från hela världen, särskilt samerna, säger Erena. Som maoriprinsessa har hon kontakt och samarbete med olika ursprungsfolken och deras andligaledare runt om i världen, till exempel hans heliga höghet Dalai Lama och hövding Oren Lyons. Projektet skulle innebära att möta skandinaviska regeringar och beslutfattare för en dialog om vikten av fred för att skydda ursprungsfolken, naturen och vår levande planet.
Inspirerad som ordförande för Green Cross Sweden och dess internationella plattform vill Erena förena människor världen över för fred och skyddandet av vår Moder Jord. Hon vill sprida budskapet för Moder Jords räckning och engagera människor för att gå med i Green Cross-rörelsen som medlemmar.
Erena uppmanar hela världen att förena sig för fred och ge mänskligheten och tillsammans med Moder Jord en framtid.

HISTORIAN
Berättelsen om Green Cross International
Idén om att starta Green Cross för miljön började år 1990 strax efter Berlinmurens fall, när Global Forum on Environment and Development for the Survival of Humanity hölls i Moskva. Mötet anordnades av Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders, tillsammans med landets dåvarande president Michail Gorbatjov. På forumet fanns representanter från alla världens hörn, från ideella organisationer, ursprungsbefolkningar, till amerikanska och ryska vetenskapsmän samt andliga ledare.
Det var då president Michail Gorbatjov i ett tal förde fram förslag till det internationella samfundet att man borde stödja FN:s första konferens om miljö och utveckling i Rio de Janeiro (1992). President Gorbatjov föreslog även ett totalt förbud mot alla kärnvapen i världen. I talet framförde han idén att skapa Green Cross, en organisation som skulle vara för miljön som Röda Korset är för människan.
Syftet med organisationen skulle vara att förhindra miljökatastrofer orsakade av människan och främja internationellt miljösamarbete över nationsgränser. President Gorbatjov fick stående ovationer för sitt förslag.
Michail Gorbatjov insåg tidigt att den globala miljökrisen är ett allvarligt hot mot planeten och mänsklighetens överlevnad. Han tilldelades Nobels fredspris 1990 för sina insatser för nedrustning och att få ett slut på det kalla kriget.
Initiativet till att skapa organisationen Green Cross togs 1992 i samband med FN:s miljökonferens då Michail Gorbatjov blev tillfrågad av riksdagsledamöter världen över om att leda organisationen.
Green Cross International konstituerades 1993 i Kyoto, Japan med syftet att främja den globala miljösäkerheten. Andra som har bidragit till att organisationen grundats är Shoo Iwasaki, idag ordförande i Green Cross Japan, och Diane Meyer Simon, ordförande primus emeritus Global Green-USA (GC nationella organisation i USA).
Idag är Green Cross verksam i 28 länder med GCI huvudkontor i Genève. Organisationen är politiskt och religiöst obunden och verkar gränsöverskridande för att förena freds-, säkerhets- och miljöfrågor. Som icke-statlig organisation arbetar Green Cross International för att främja ett globalt samarbete och samverkan mellan samhällssektorer.
Green Cross i Sverige
Idén om att skapa en organisation som “Gröna Korset” för att skydda vår planet var även en kollektiv tanke som spirade bland en grupp människor i Sverige. Green Cross har sina rötter i Sverige under 90-talet då man började arbeta för en förändrad syn på säkerhet, det som idag kallas för miljösäkerhet.
Det var Jan Danielson, miljöjournalisten känd som programledare för SVT:s Mitt i Naturen, som tillsammans med Maj-Britt Theorin, f.d. EU-parlamentarikern som grundade Gröna Korset Sverige 1994 i Kristianstad. Andra eldsjälar som har bidragit till uppstarten av organisationen i Sverige är Marilyn Barden, Annika Blom, Maud Frölich, Anna Thorén Persson och Ninna Widstrand.
Från början var organisationens huvudfråga att främja skapandet av en Miljöbrigad – att använda civila och militära resurser för miljöskydd och i beredskap inför miljökatastrofer. Inom EU och FN genomförde Maj-Britt Theorin studier om en förändrad syn på säkerhetspolitiska frågor.
Redan 1991 ledde Maj-Britt Theorin “FN-studien 45/58 Charting Potential Uses of Resources Allocated to Military Activities for Civilian Endeavours to Protect the Environment“.
Resolutionen lades fram i EU och Riksdagen. Förslaget innebar skapandet av ett internationellt miljövärn och handlade om hur militära resurser kan användas för miljöändamål, Betänkande om miljö, säkerhet och utrikespolitik; Utskottet för utrikes-, säkerhets- och försvarsfrågor.
Lobbyarbetet för att främja en Miljöbrigad fortsätter idag inom Green Cross. Arbetsgruppen leds av major John-Olov Fridh.
Att förena säkerhets- och miljöpolitiska frågor är ett steg mot en hållbar värld. Idag finns ett akut behov av samordning mellan världens länder för att förbättra beredskapen vid miljökatastrofer och för att bevara den globala miljön.
Idag är Green Cross Sweden en av 30 nationella organisationer och verksam inom alla Green Cross Internationals program. Vi samarbetar på ett brett plan, på lokal, nationell och internationell nivå samt över organisationsgränser. Green Cross Sweden kontor finns på Kastellgatan 1 i Göteborg.
En av de viktigaste uppgifterna som Green Cross arbetar med är att bevara vårt livsnödvändiga vatten som en av de viktigaste förutsättningen för allt liv på vår planet. Artisten Ebbot Lundberg med sitt starka engagemang för miljön. Genom inspirerande musik och föredrag liftar Ebbot fram många viktiga frågor för att skydda planeten, bland annat ett stärkt skydd av sjön Vättern.
– Det är dags att inse vårt syfte här på planeten. Vill du vara problemet eller vill du vara lösningen? Earth Charter kallar på dig tillbaka till Moder Jord så välkommen ombord, säger Ebbot.
Tonia Moya som är en ordförande, anser att verklig förändring för att skapa en hållbar framtid börjar med en evolutionär förändring av vårt eget tankesätt.
– Alla de ekologiska kriser som utmanar vårt öde och som vi har skapat själva är en avspegling av vårt eget medvetande. Inom oss har vi potentialen för att förändra allt. Vi måste hitta tillbaka till att leva i harmoni med naturlagarna och med Moder Jord.
– Tillsammans är vi en enorm kraft för att omvandla vår värld i riktning mot en hållbar framtid för allt levande och för kommande generationer.
Gorbachev förklarar vikten av Green Cross arbete världen över inför de miljö-, sociala och ekonomiska utmaningar som vi står inför idag.
